No matter the season, the latest fashion trends make their way to retail stores near you and are hyped up as the must-have pieces to try next. It can be confusing at best, and slightly misleading at worst. Before you get information overload, step back and reflect on what pieces you frequently grab when you get dressed. These are your reliable staples, which could be refreshed from season to season, rather than starting new every season.
Editing before adding. I understand that it can be slightly overwhelming to tackle a closet edit solo. That’s why I enjoy helping you go through your closet before a shopping trip and make necessary edits. In some cases, some items that were workhorses, currently have seen better days. This happened years ago when I helped a client with “editing before adding” prior to the summer season. While the look of a long tunic over skinny pants was fresh and working well, when she tried it on during our sesh it had no excitement. We’d moved on to other looks that made her look refreshed. She was happy to have those items moved out of her closet.
After our edit she was happy to know that everything in her closet was supporting her. She also appreciated my attentiveness to the details and how dialed in we were with her shopping objectives. We curated her wardrobe for all her upcoming events.
Handle what hasn’t been worn. Another reason for a closet visit could be to focus on the pieces you love that were recently purchased and just aren’t wearing. The reasons for not wearing garments can be many, including you don’t have the right topper for it. Or you’ve given up wearing high heels, maybe you don’t have the right dressy flats to go with some of your social outfits. It feels good to refresh items you’ve already invested in. You’ll get a shopping list that includes the pieces you’ll want to look for to complete these outfits.
When I create the shopping list for clients, I ask them to bring the wardrobe items that we’re building outfits for on our shopping trip. This is a huge time saver and keeps us committed and focused on using what you have in your closet. More refresh and less redo!
Clients need help with upcoming events. As I’m meeting with clients and talking about the upcoming season, I’m learning about the events and/or business trips they plan to take in the coming months. “Would you like me to help you pack for your trip?” I’ll ask. Many of you have a sigh of relief that comes over you when you know that I can take packing and styling stress away from your busy work schedules.
Head to the shoe department. There isn’t anything that refreshes a wardrobe like a new pair of shoes. There are new looks in shoes every season and as your style expert I can be a second set of eyes to see what’s best for you. I’ve been a shoe-lover since I was a young girl. I came by it honestly because both my mother and aunt had amazing shoe collections. I believe my clients have come to appreciate my attention to shoe detail as it gives them something new, modern, and comfortable to feel relevant and hip.
There are changes to wardrobe basics…every season. You know the basic colors – black, brown, camel, and navy right? Designers spend months recreating new looks to captivate your interest and keep you on your toes. I say, “Hold on to your timeless basic pieces.” And be discerning about what new cuts and styles flatter you and speak to your personal style. There may be on-trend looks that you love and can’t live without, like bows, asymmetrical draping on a blouse, or a side-zip trouser. Together we can find what you need.
There are hundreds of tips and tricks that I’ve learned over the years to keep your wardrobe stunning and the environmental impact minimal. As you decide what to do with the items that no longer serve you, consider selling, donating, recycling, mending, tailoring, or repurposing them. Questions? Send me an email: info@JennyBailey.co
