The Words That Shape Your Wardrobe: What Do You Want To Say With Your Personal Style?

After the initial consultation, before I talk about color palettes, capsule wardrobes, or fit and fabric, I ask every client I work with to do something that surprises them.

I say, “Imagine how you would feel when you’re completely, unapologetically yourself. What words would you use to describe that feeling, and further, let’s align those feelings with your intended personal style.”

Then I hand them a list.

It’s a list I’ve curated over time — a collection of visual impression words that help my clients articulate something they’ve always felt but rarely been given language for. Because here’s what I’ve come to understand after years of this work: style isn’t only about clothes. Style is communication. And like any language, it begins with knowing what you want to say.

Why Words Come Before Wardrobes

The conventional way of approaching personal style – scrolling through inspiration boards, filling online carts with pieces that look beautiful on the models – can leave people wondering why the wardrobe they tried to assemble doesn’t match their personality or goals. Sound familiar?

The missing piece isn’t more clothing. It’s clarity.

When I sit with a client, and we find their 3 to 5 visual impression words — the words that make their eyes light up, that make them say yes, that’s it — something shifts. Those words become a compass. They guide every decision: what to reach for in the morning, what to invest in, what to let go of with confidence rather than guilt.

The Words Themselves Are Wisdom

What moves me most about this process is how specific each word is. Taken together, they tell a complete story about a person — their values, their energy, the way they move through the world.

Consider the difference between someone who chooses Elegant— a high level of quality — and someone who chooses Earthy — grounded in simplicity, casual, suggestive of the earth itself. Both are beautiful. Both are complete. But they call for entirely different garments, patterns, textures, and energies. One reaches toward refinement; the other roots into the soil.

Or think about the quiet dignity of Esteemed — honorable and distinguished — sitting alongside the electric aliveness of Energetic — showing or acting with a great amount of vitality. One speaks in long, considered sentences. The other moves fast and lights up a room. Neither is more worthy. Both deserve to be dressed accordingly.

This is why the words matter. They carry nuance that “classic” or “trendy” simply cannot hold.

What Your Words Reveal About You

Over the years, I’ve noticed that the words my clients choose are rarely random. They reflect deep longings — sometimes for who they already are, sometimes for who they’re becoming.

A woman building her own business who gravitates towards Independent – not looking to others for opinions or guidance in conduct – and Unstoppable – a force of nature; a trailblazer is telling me something profound. She’s not just choosing an aesthetic. She’s affirming an identity. Her wardrobe needs to match the size of her vision.

And then there are clients who surprise even themselves — the executive who chooses Eccentric – different from the ordinary; unusual in an appealing way – alongside Credible – the appearance aligns with a sense of reliability and trustworthiness. What a beautiful, nuanced person that pairing reveals. Someone who has earned the right to take up space in their own original way.

The Subtle Distinctions That Change Everything

Part of what makes this process so rich is learning to feel the difference between words that seem similar but are actually quite distinct.

Polished speaks to attention to detail — clean, ironed, well-kept, curated in the quiet moments nobody sees. Dapper carries a different spirit entirely — neat and trim, yes, but with a kind of lightness, a deliberateness that borders on artful. Sharp is something else again — keen, quick-witted, the visual equivalent of incisive thinking.

Or consider Friendly – showing kindly interest and goodwill – versus Charismatic -possessing special traits that attract, inspire, or fascinate. A friendly person makes you feel welcome. A charismatic person makes you feel seen. Both are gifts. But they dress differently.

How to Find Your Words

When I work with clients on this, I encourage them to move through the list without overthinking. Notice what resonates in the body before the mind has a chance to second-guess it. Notice what feels aspirational versus what feels true.

A few questions that help:

How do you want to feel when you get dressed? Not how do you want to look — how do you want to feel. Confident? Calm? Approachable? Grounded?

What do you want the room to receive from you? Not what do you want to project — what do you want others to genuinely receive? Trust? Joy? Authority? Warmth?

Which words make you feel a little brave? Sometimes the word that makes your heart skip is the one that’s most true. We’re often reaching toward ourselves, not away.

Choose 3 to 5. Sit with them for a few days. See if they hold.

Your Words Are a Living Document

What’s beautiful about this process is that your visual impression words are not permanent. They’re a living expression of where you are right now — who you’re stepping into, what you value in this season of your life.

I’ve watched clients who spent years choosing Professional and Credible eventually reach for Expressive and Colorful — not because they became less serious, but because they became more whole. I’ve seen the reverse too: someone who lived in Fun and Rebel discovering, with quiet surprise, that Refined and Poised now feel more like home.

This is the power of intentional style. It grows with you. It tells the truth about you — not the truth of who you were, or who you think you should be, but who you genuinely are, right now, in this beautiful and unrepeatable chapter of your life.

Trust the timing of your life. Make the most of every moment, and dress to express your true self.
